I don't know where you got this idea but spool valve assembly for 06 (15810-RKB-J01 ) is $500+ just for the part (MSRP for the part is apparently $722 - from hondapartsnow.com) so $950 while a bit on the high side, isn't WAY out of the line considering they will most likely not get the parts online and have to warranty the work.
Mar 5, 2022 · 202,014 MILES. While getting the timing belt changed the dealer said they found a small oil leak around the VTEC spool valve and it's dripping onto the alternator. They quoted an extra $775.00 to fix it. They said they have seen these types of leaks ruin the alternator eventually. I have not seen any oil on the ground where I park the van. The valve spool area looks good, no signs of oil leaking from there. I cleaned the area around the valve cover a bit to see if it comes back. i also went underneath the car to take a few pics of the oily oil reservoir. Couldn’t tell where the fluid was coming from though. I wiped the oil pan screws off as well to see if it comes back.The leak is the actual spool valve itself. It's fairly common. FYI I was able to get my local dealer's parts counter to match honda parts online's price + shipping which was roughly an $80-100 savings. 6 hours is a bit of a reach IMO, unless they are also going to remove the rear valve cover and check valve lash on the rear cylinders as well.
