While base building is so enticing, early game it can be cumbersome to even attempt staying at said base due to regular "less than kind" visits. Live in a town for a couple weeks in-game, learn which groups kill, and which just knock you out. Food, pretty easy to manage with a small group.

Head to Shark in the heart of the swamp. You can escape everything but the blood spiders by jumping in water so you should be able to get there relatively easy. Make sure to have backpack (s) and invest everything else into drugs. Head put and go northeast.
