The museum was incorporated in 1870 and opened two years later. It is home to important collections of Egyptian, Babylonian, Greek and Roman, European, pre-Columbian, New Guinean, Islamic, and American art. Human-Headed Winged Lion. Better known as Lamassu, these human-headed winged lions (which depict goddessed) were used to protect important doorways in Assyrian palaces.
