Yes, the grip is large, but I still installed the small beavertail backstrap, and really like the way it fits my hand. One is its much simpler and not a lot to it. The XD is a good pistol but its just a Glock copy imo with more "features" add to it. XD9 fits my hand better but the Glock 19 is more concealable because of the shorter grip. The XD is a pretty slept on gun, its comfortable, easy to shoot, and easier to manipulate than a gen 3 19. That being said, If we Californians had better access to a gen 5, I would probably go with that. Trijicon seems to be brighter, at least in the yellow sights. I do notice a big difference between the XR and XD. XD certainly provides fast target acquisition at self defense ranges, but so does the XR. If you train front sight shooting, I don't think you'll notice much difference at all.

I think Glocks are preferable if you only shoot Glocks, and XD's are preferable if you shoot a lot of different pistols. imo it's due to the Glock's grip angle being different than 85% (arbitrary number) of the rest of the pistols on the market, notably the 1911.
