I personally use Rotella 15W-40, it costs $10 a gallon, and if can make diesel engines last 300,000 miles it works good enough for my bike.
The most common cause for that much leak is that one or more of the "freeze" plugs in the head under the cams has been pushed out. It could be a cracked block, but that is more rare.
