Its 70/30 to me. 70% Infantry to fend of all those climbing the ladders and defending the gateway if needed. A slaughterhouse if u play with sturgia like I do. Those 30% archers are useful to help poking the invaders and supply the mangonels. I don't really care if spear or axe for the infantry, they just need to blobb the walls/ladders
I've done a lot of testing and imperial legionaries are pretty soundly the best, I believe sturgian axemen were the next best shield unit followed by aserai (don't remember the name of the unit); on top of that there are three imperial factions on the map so there are a lot more towns and villages to recruit from, and no matter where on the map you're fighting imperial territory won't be far away.Here is my army breakdown: 20 Khuzait Darkon - enough shield for archers and a balanced melee unit 20 Sturgian Heroic Linebreakers - the shock troop for when infantry or calvary close with my archers 60 Brittian Fian Champions - anti-calvary and infantry 15 Elite Lancers - set follow me to take the pressure off 135 Khan Guards - move to flank ...I've been wanting to try like 10-20% shield infantry, 50-60% shock troops and 30% archers. This way you don't have pesky tier 6 units booking it ahead of the pack unprotected where they get mowed down by ranged units.

Enemy horse archers tend to veer off in a certain direction. Have your cavalry follow you there to take them on. While your infantry and archers deal with the enemy ground forces.

all ranged units are OP, it's 1-3 hit ko for most units, and the top units can only take 5-10 hits. compared to warband's 5-10 at the low end and 15-20, with low tier basically useless vs high. then there's the mods extreme versions, 2-3 hit-ko was scary, so were the guys that needed 10+ hits.If you want a 'tank'-ish melee cavalry that can mix-up longer in chaotic fights, the Imperial Cataphracts.
