Finally diving into my Secrets of Magic book… I have been wanting to build a staff wielding and whacking, spellcasting mage/martial hybrid since 2e launched. It's more versatile (although spell attack w/o spellstrike is going to hurt) and the damage is less swingy, but you lose the persistent damage against metal wearing enemies (I'm assuming the +1 doesn't matter, since your using the spellstrike role).
