I am pretty set on a M1A type of rifle, or maybe even a CMP Garand, but I think the M1A is a better choice. It has a medium-weight premium air-gauged National Match barrel (National Match being Springfield’s branded designation for components tuned for competition—or so is my understanding) and a National Match 2-stage trigger (tuned for 4.5-5.0 pounds).

Whne I was shoppingfor a new M1A a few years ago, I made the choice of going with the "Loaded" model. The sights are superb. At 100 and 200 yards, it is "dead-on" accurate. I have not been able to get to a range in my area that has a longer distance. IMHO, it is well worth the extra money.The M1A Loaded is a perfect blend of the traditional and modern with applications in both hunting and home defense.
