Those two knobs are not connected to anything, especially to the locking mechanism of the mid-gate itself. Turn the black handle in the center of the mid-gate clockwise to unlock the mid-gate. With the window in place, only the mid-gate itself will open. If the rear window is removed, the mid-gate with the attached crossbar will open.

No one in that linked thread has the dual downfire 10" hifisoundconnection box. They are complaining about quality and fitment of the midgate sub box setups. I did have a single 12" downfire box from hifisoundconnection in my '04 silverado and it didn't leak, was carpeted really nice, and hit really hard with no issues.
