When it goes into reduced engine, the ECM turns off the injector on the cylinder that is knocking, and it goes away. Guessing you can figure out which cylinder it is by turning off injectors with a scan tool.

The duramax engine has a long history of breaking cranks at that location. This is so much of a common issue that people have created cam shafts with altered firing orders to try to remove the stress from that point on the crank. I made 2 passes at scheids with a broken crank. Oil pressure was fine, you couldnt hardly here anything, and it ran pretty smooth. It still made a 7.1 @96mph pass in the 1/8th with one cp3 cause it wouldnt keep the belt on cause the balancer was wobbling, it would throw it when it shifted to 2nd.

its the operator fault. he is over stressing the engine. when the crank breaks on the 5-6 rod, its always a misuse of the engine.
