Last fork oil change, I went with the Amsoil shock and fork oil w/conditioner 10W. That was 2 years ago and I plan to change it out when I tear things down in Jan 2015. Peace of mind. Kinda like changing a cam, you change the lifters and rockers at the same time, and they all work together for the better. You can play around with the fork oil viscosity too. 10W is stock, but some have gone as high as 20W. Here is page 80 from an 02 1800VTX/R on changing oil. Level surface, start engine and run for 3 to 5 minutes. Oil light goes off. Stop engine and wait 2 - 3 minutes. Remove dipstick and wipe clean. Hold Bike In upright Position. Insert dipstick until it seats but do not screw it in. Remove dipstick and read.After reading several threads about oil, decided it was time to do an oil change myself. In the last 4 years of owning an Aero 750 and now a VTX 1300 I had been taking the bike in to the dealer per the maintenance schedule. Have done a bunch of mods from all the great posts on the cafe, but left the maintenance work to the shop.

One at the front of the motor and one towards the back. There is also crush washers on the drain plugs, make sure you put them back on or replace them every 2 or 3 oil changes.Harley recommends a 20w-50 oil, so Rotella or other synthetic diesel oils will not do. However, the 15w-40 diesel oils meet the same film strength standard as 20w-50 oil and are just fine to run in your Harley. There is nothing wrong with using synthetics as long as you use the type appropriate for bikes. Even Honda makes a synthetic so your mechanic is full of it except for the moly additive part. Amsoil and Royal Purple make good synthetics. Many people use Mobil 1 red cap. Some use Rotella T.

I know I have the exact amount of fluid,, but when I measure the inches a fluid I am nowhere near the correct amount.Which is 125 mm or 4.9 in on the C model.
