On my 0ld 2009 and 2006 you did have to do what Pirate said disconnect the ground cable at the battery for 20-30 seconds. Hit the little button on the gauge and it will change between odometer, trip tick, hour meter, rpm, temp, voltage, etc. I usually have mine on rpm, but I use the temp to monitor after a coolant drain and refill to make sure all the air is out and the fan cycles properly.
