I own a '40s vintage Ithaca M37 12 ga field grade with a fixed modified choke 26" barrel, a '50s vintage Ithaca M37 20ga deluxe grade with a polychoke 26" barrel (beautiful gun), and a late '80s model Remington 870 Express 12ga with a 28" screw-in choke vent rib barrel. The Ithaca 20 is far and away my favorite.

The "early" 3 inch guns were marked "MAG" on the receiver right before the serial number. Shortly after IAC took over in 1987, they discontinued the 2 3/4 guns and made all 3 inch guns. Eventually the "MAG" marking was dropped. As Old Cowboy said, the 3 inch guns have a receiver that is 1/4 inch longer then the 2 3/4 guns.
